Physical Education

Mrs. Scott

Physical education at Richboro Elementary School is more than just gym class. Children in grades 1- 6 participate in physical education class weekly. Sneakers and comfortable clothing is a must. A typical day would include a timed run and warm up stretches, skill technique and practice, culminating with a game utilizing the skills learned. Throughout the year, children actively participate in individual, partner and group activities.

Students are encouraged to try new skills while exhibiting sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play. Physical, social and emotional growth is attained.

All classes learn a vast array of skills during their six-year span in the gymnasium. The younger students’ curriculum includes: locomotor skills, eye-hand and footwork, tumbling, climbing, movement education, low organized games, cooperative activities and sportsmanship. Specifically, soccer, bowling, scooters, holiday games, bean bags, hoops, parachute, newcombe, jump rope, dance, climbing, pillo polo, frisbee, gymnastics, rock climbing and more.

The older children continue to perfect the above skills, while developing skills in lifetime and team sports, dance, fitness testing, strength and endurance activities, and understanding complex rules. Specifically, speedball, team handball, soccer, softball, football, volleyball, basketball, aerobics, weight training, gymnastics, climbing, floor hockey, square dance, frisbee, rock climbing, badminton, tennis and juggling. Also, a sporting news homework assignment is given each marking period. The students have a chance to "show off" their talents or report on current sporting events.

At the end of the year all students partake in a day filled with individual and group contests…field day. The sixth graders compete in a district wide track meet held at the high school stadium. Over 1000 children compete in individual and team events.

To broaden their horizons and climb to new heights, the fourth graders take an annual indoor high climbing field trip to Doylestown Adventure Center. There they learn more about belaying, lowering, and safety equipment. Mrs. Scott and their classroom teachers accompany the children and join in the fun. The children form unique bonds in this high climbing adventure. The rock climbing fever is spreading throughout the district.

It is the hope of their teacher, Mrs. Scott, that all children be enthusiastic about physical learning and fitness and that this enthusiasm be carried outside the classroom.
