Newtown Elementary School

Classroom Lessons, Peer Time Lunch and Teen Talk Groups
 Parent Letter

Dear Parents,                                                                                                                                                    2012 – 2013 School Year

At Newtown Elementary our building goal is to create a learning environment in which each community member contributes in a positive manner. In addition to what the classroom teachers are teaching students about getting along and solving problems, all students in Grade 1 through Grade 6 will have the opportunity to participate in small, educational group discussions and activities. The purpose of these groups is to foster effective social and life skills. Topics will be focused on friendship, decision making, communication and leadership skills as well as cooperation, sportsmanship, respect and responsibility.

Groups for grades 1 - 5 will meet once a week during lunch for three sessions.  These groups will be an extension of guidance lessons taught in the classroom.

6th grade groups will meet for 30 minutes during language arts once a week for six sessions.  These groups will be based on Sean Covey's 7 Habits of Effective Teens.  They will teach students life skills to be successful in their secondary schooling.

Our expectations for the guidance program are high. We hope this experience will help empower our children with the skills, knowledge, and strategies that enable them to be productive and successful members of their communities.

Parents will receive helpful information and resources upon completion of the lessons.
