-Third Graders will be learning about the ancient Mayan culture and looking at the architecture at Chichen Itza. They will learn that tropical jungle surrounds the ancient city and that the Mayans used bark from the Amate trees to communicate, record data and make art. Students will create their own Amate bark paintings with repeating designs.
-Students will look at the mysterious earth work Stonehenge and think about the possibilities surrounding why it was created. Students will then transform ordinary toilet paper rolls into their own piece of a henge with plaster craft. Once each student's henge is complete we will connect everyones together so that collaboratively we will build our own class Stonehenge. Parents please remind students to each bring in 3 toilet paper rolls, Thanks!
(If time)-Students will look closely at the painting The Gross Clinic, by Thomas Eakins. They will learn that the painting depicts a scientific advancement in medicine. Students will then think of a tool/technology that they use in their everyday life to advance or improve. Students will illustrate their invention and write a short explanation on what their invention does.
